Principals

Responsibilities of Principals

The principal, or their designee, is responsible for overseeing Teacher Candidate placements at their school site. Effective leadership is important in communicating the importance of the Mentor Teacher - Teacher Candidate relationship and the status of the Teacher Candidate. In collaboration with district leadership, placement sites are selected due to of the professional and welcoming attitude of site administrators and teachers toward CSU Fullerton Teacher Candidates.

The principal or their designee is responsible for the following:

  1. Work with the district placement coordinator to identify qualified Mentor Teachers (see MT qualifications hereOpens in new window ) who have demonstrated excellence in classroom teaching, the ability to mentor adult learners, and a desire to work with a Teacher Candidate. The Mentor Teacher should have tenure in the district and the same credential area as the Teacher Candidate.
  2. Remind the Mentor Teacher(s) to attend the Mentor Teacher Orientation hosted by CSUF and to create a calendar of important reporting dates. See the Mentor Teacher Responsibilities pageOpens in new window  for more details about these.
  3. Provide an orientation for Teacher Candidate(s) to the campus and the mission of the school, familiarize them with student organizations and activities, discuss the rules and regulations applicable to Teacher Candidates, introduce them to key staff, and familiarize them with the facilities within the site.
  4. Explain the purpose and expecations of clinical fieldwork and student teaching for school staff, parents, and school-affiliated partners.
  5. Ensure that there are appropriate facilities, equipment and supplies necessary for the Teacher Candidate to be recognized as a co-teacher in the Mentor Teacher's classroom and at the school site.  This may include obtaining a desk and storage space, parking privileges, a teacher mailbox, school keys, a faculty ID, etc..
  6. Ensure the Teacher Candidate is able to video record their teaching and collect student work samples - in compliance with site and district policies - as part of their mandatory California Teacher Performance Expectation submissions, Cycle 1 and Cycle 2.
  7. Communicate with the district placement coordinator any concerns about a Mentor Teacher - Teacher Candidate pairing. The district placement coordinator will then determine whether to contact the Single Subject program director. If the actions of a Teacher Candidate are such that a placement must be immediately terminated, share the rationale/evidence for this decision as soon as possible with the district placement coordinator and Single Subject program director (Dr. Maria Grant, mgrant@fullerton.edu).
