Master of Science in Education (Reading)

In an age of increasing demand for a highly literate society, Reading Department faculty strive to prepare reading professionals who have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to effectively integrate contemporary theories of reading with sound pedagogical practice.

Course Requirements

Prerequisite: READ 501 Assessment of Professional Competencies (1 unit, 5 weeks)
    Required Core Courses (10 units)
  • EDEL 511 Survey of Educational Research (3)
  • READ 516 Diagnostic-Prescriptive Teaching of Reading (4)
  • EDEL 536 Curriculum Theory & Development (3)
    Concentration Courses (19 units)
  • READ 507 Reading and Thinking in the Content Areas (3)
  • READ 508 Teaching Reading/LA in Today's Elementary Schools (3)
  • READ 514 Linguistics and Reading (3)
  • READ 520 Computers in Reading (2)
  • READ 560 The Sociocultural Context of Literacy and Learning (3)
  • READ 570 Developing Literature-Based Reading/LA Programs (2)
  • READ 581 Remediation of Reading Difficulties
    Culminating Experience (1 unit - Selection of one of the following:)
  • READ 595 Advanced Studies and Comprehensive Exam (1)
  • READ 597 Project (1)
  • READ 598 Thesis (1)
    Additional Requirements
  1. Maintain an average Grade Point Average of 3.0 throughout the program, and prior to enrolling in READ 581.
  2. Earn a passing evaluation on the Writing Proficiency assignment completed in EDEL 511 (or complete an approved improvement plan).
  3. By program completion, submit 2 letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your teaching expertise and 2 letters of recommendations from individuals familiar with your academic expertise (usually course professors). Recommendation forms are available in the Department office.

Advisement

Advisement is available to all program candidates. Candidates for the Masters degree should complete a formal Study Plan, approved by the Graduate Advisor, Dr. Rosario Ordoņez-Jasis. The Study Plan typically is completed during the first semester, after completing the 1-unit, 5-week prerequisite course, READ 501, Assessment of Professional Competencies.
