Dr. Maritza Lozano

Assistant Professor

Biography

Dr. Lozano has been part of several collaborative design partnerships that have included universities, districts, schools, and communities working together to address pressing problems of practice. Her focus on the integration of research and practice is informed by her 20 years of professional experience in P-20 schools. She began her career as a bilingual elementary school teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, serving also as an instructional literacy coach, and a literacy content expert. In addition to her experiences in LAUSD, Dr. Lozano has held positions as a teacher resident selector for Pittsburgh Public Schools, a Teaching Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, and a fieldwork supervisor for California State University, Dominguez Hills. She has been a consultant for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in Palo Alto and the Institute for Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining the department of Educational Leadership, Dr. Lozano co-directed of the Improvement by Design Lab Group's Credit Recovery project.

The design of equitable learning experiences and the use of improvement science approaches to support professional learning in P-20 schools serving culturally and linguistically diverse students.
