Scope of Credential (What will I be able to teach when I earn the credential?)

The Single Subject Teaching Credential in World Language authorizes an individual to teach a language other than English in departmentalized classrooms. Holders of this credential may teach at any grade level, but the great majority of world language classes occur in grades seven through twelve. Current language credentials include the following*:

  • American Sign Language (ASL)*
  • Arabic*
  • Armenian*
  • Cantonese*
  • NEW – English Language Development (ELD) – approved 11/2016
  • Farsi*
  • Filipino*
  • French
  • German
  • Hebrew*
  • Hindi*
  • Hmong*
  • Italian*
  • Japanese
  • Khmer*
  • Korean
  • Latin*
  • Mandarin
  • Portuguese*
  • Punjabi*
  • Russian*
  • Spanish
  • Vietnamese

* fieldwork placement will be difficult or may be unavailable

Subject Matter Preparation Program

You may establish subject matter competency through successful completion of an approved Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP).  California State University Fullerton offers a SMPP in the following content areas (Click on the links to see the specific coursework required):

California Subject Examination for Teachers

You may also establish subject matter competency through successful passage of the appropriate California Subject Examination for Teachers in that content area.  Most CSET examinations consist of three subtests that must be passed to demonstrate subject matter competence.
