Virtual Student Teaching for the Single Subject Credential Program

We have worked with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to provide you with approved virtual student teaching options. To ensure completion of student teaching requirements, please consult with your university supervisor to determine how many more observation visits need to be completed and which Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs) still need to be demonstrated and evaluated.

Teacher Candidates Continuing with their Master Teacher virtually

If a Teacher Candidate is still teaching with the Master Teacher in a virtual setting, the Teacher Candidate should continue to teach in that setting and should continue doing coaching cycles with the supervisor.

Teacher Candidates Who Have Been Displaced

If the Teacher Candidate (TC) has been removed from the placement due to the COVID-19 shut down, they may choose from other virtual student teaching options (click here to see the list of options). Any of the options may be used to complete a coaching cycles. Teacher Candidates should submt the required documentation (i.e., lesson plan, video summary, etc.) for the selected option to their supervisors. The Coaching Cycle Form (CCF) is then uploaded by the supervisor to the Online Evaluation System.

Completed Coaching Cycle Forms

Supervisors and teacher candidates will continue to use Coaching Cycle Forms (CCFs) to document progression toward mastering the TPEs, regardless of their student teaching setting. Any coaching cycles, with CCFs, that you have COMPLETED   are counted towards the required six observation visits for each semester of student teaching. Each Teacher Candidate should cover all six TPEs each semester within the six coaching cycles. As usual, 1-2 TPEs can be a focus for each coaching cycle. Supervisors will continue to upload the CCFs to the Online Evaluation System and mark their rating of the focus TPEs*. This is the documentation for the CTC that TCs have achieved proficiency of all TPEs over the course of student teaching. *Please note that candidates do not receive an email copy of the completed TPE Evaluations. Therefore, Supervisors must forward the confirmation email with the TPE ratings to the candidates.

Recording Evidence of  Progression on TPEs

Teaching Practice

Evidence

Planning

  • Record planning sessions with MT, peers, or supervisors
  • co-write lesson plans with MT or peers
  • upload clean copies of student work that are aligned with your lesson plan

Teaching

Choose from the list of Menu items to engage or study teaching for the rest of the semester.

  • If you can co-teach, online, with your MT that is the best choice
  • If you can co-teach, online with a peer with a small group of students this is the second best choice

Evidence of Student Learning

Collect and analyze student work

Reflection

(You may add more reflection questions that align with the TPEs)

Record yourself and/or your MT, supervisor or peers reflecting on the following questions:

  • What were the learning goals? (TPE 3)
  • How did you engage and apply knowledge of students (TPE 1)
  • How did you set clear and positive norms for inclusive participations? (TPE 2)
  • What evidence shows that students met/did not meet the learning goal? (TPE 5)
  • How did the planning impact student access to learning goals? (TPE 1,4).
  • How did your task or assessment make student thinking visible? (TPE 5)
