Scott Avenue Elementary School

The collaboration between Scott Avenue Elementary, located in East Whittier,  and the CSUF Special Education Department began in the Fall of 1998. Observation Days were implemented in classrooms where exemplary teaching was taking place.  One such observation day occurred on the first day of school in September and credential candidates were able to observe introduction activities and ways teachers establish routines and classroom management strategies.  The first semester Linda Low, principal at Scott Avenue, participated in a panel of principals sharing what they look for in teachers for our Foundations Class.

By the spring of 1999 our credential candidates were doing fieldwork and student teaching at Scott Avenue.  We were able to have another observation day at Scott Avenue's campus and more than fifteen teachers participated.

The school year of 1999-2000 saw continual growth in the collaboration between Scott Avenue and CSUF Special Education Department.  Eleven students have done fieldwork/student teaching on site and Scott Avenue teachers participated in SIM training and Support Provider training hosted by the SPED Dept. at the university.  Observation Days were held again, drawing more CSUF students and creating more Scott Avenue teacher interest.  A Math Night, instructing more than 200 students and their families, was provided by Special Education credential candidates on the Scott Avenue campus and was considered a huge success.

Scott Avenue and CSUF Special Education make an awesome team!  Teachers are challenged to grow and hone their skills as they present "best practice" strategies for observation.  Our credential candidates benefit from the expert classroom management modeled at this site as well as the hands on direct instruction they practice under the experienced guidance of these teachers.
