Scope of Credential |
The Single Subject Teaching Credential in Foundational-Level Mathematics authorizes the holder to teach the content areas taught to the vast majority of California's K-12 public school math students: general mathematics, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, and consumer mathematics. Instruction is permitted in grades twelve and below, including preschool, and in classes organized primarily for adults. The teaching of Advanced Placement (AP) courses is not authorized by this credential.
NOTE: While in the credential program, students will not be permitted to teach above Algebra 1. |

- Do you already have a Multiple Subject Credential and just want to earn a Single Subject credential in Foundational Level Mathematics (to teach from middle school mathematics through advanced algebra)?
- Establish Subject Matter Competence through successful passage of CSET: Mathematics Subtests I and II
- Complete EDSC 542M Advanced Methods of Teaching Foundational Level Mathematics in Secondary Schools (You must have either passed at least 1 of the CSET Math exams OR earned credit for 1 semester of Calculus to take the course!)

| California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET). The CSET is the set of examinations used by the Commission to verify subject matter knowledge. Individuals who choose to satisfy the subject matter requirement in FLM by the examination option must obtain passing scores on the first two subtests of the CSET: Mathematics. These subtests include: Subtest I: Algebra; Number Theory (test code 110) and Subtest II: Geometry; Probability and Statistics (test code 111). Preliminary Single Subject Credential (Level I)
Your first steps are to attend an Overview and meet the FLM Program Advisor. The coursework for the credential is outlined below. In addition, candidates must meet the California Teaching Performance Expectations, measured by their successful completion of the Teaching Portfolio and fieldwork evaluations.
Placement Information: It is the position of the Cal State Fullerton School of Education and Department of Mathematics faculty that candidates who meet subject matter expertise for Foundational Level Mathematics should be assigned to teaching positions in grades 6-10. Unless they are on an Internship Credential, candidates in the FLM program will be assigned to the middle/junior high school level or to teach Algebra and lower at the high school level. Internship Credential candidates must be assigned all periods of instruction in grades 6-10, with no assignment higher than Geometry.

Professional Clear Single Subject Credential (Level II)
Once employed, candidates will be required to meet the new Standards of Quality and Effectiveness for Professional Teacher Induction Programs to receive their Professional Clear Credential. Programs to meet these standards will be established in collaboration with local school districts. |
