Scope of Credential (What will I be able to teach when I earn the credential?)

The Single Subject Teaching Credential in Art authorizes an individual to teach art classes in departmentalized settings.  The holders of this credential may teach at any grade level, but the great majority of Art classes occur in grades seven through twelve.  Courses include basic art, ceramics, crafts, photography, drawing, computer art/graphics, yearbook, art history, art appreciation, painting, advertising design, cinematography, jewelry, sculpture, fashion design, fibers and textiles, printmaking, multicultural art/folk art, and lettering/calligraphy.

Subject Matter Preparation Program

You may establish Subject Matter Competency through successful completion of the Subject Matter Preparation Program in Art.

California Subject Examinations for Teachers

You may establish Subject Matter Competency through successful passage of the following Content Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSETs)
  • #140 Subtest I CSET Art: Artistic Perception, Historical and Cultural Context of the Visual Arts, Aesthetic Valuing
  • #142 Subtest II CSET Art: Creative Expression, Connections, Relationships, and Applications, History and Theories of Learning in Art
