Are you interested in expanding the content areas or grade levels of your teaching authorization? Maybe you want to be authorized to teach in a second content area, or to teach special education students? Some additions are easier than others, and all depend on the requirements of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).

Authorizations that are Direct Applications to the CCTC: Adding a single subject credential or multiple subject credential to an existing single/multiple subject credential is called an “added authorization.” Added authorizations require subject matter competency and some coursework. They are direct applications to the CCTC.

Authorizations which Require Recommendation by Cal State Fullerton: Some credentials must be “recommended” by a university, and thus you must work with the Cal State Fullerton Credential Preparation Center to submit your application. If you are earning a single or multiple subject credential combined with an Education Specialist (special education) Credential, you will be required to apply through Cal State Fullerton.

Adding a Second Single Subject Specific Subject Matter Authorization to a Single Subject Credential

WHAT IT MEANS: There are two kinds of single subject authorizations. Specific Subject Matter Authorizations qualify you to teach courses in the content area of competency in secondary classrooms (grades 7-12). Introductory Subject Matter Authorizations qualify you to teach courses in the content area of competency up through grade 9. These are both preliminary credentials.

BEFORE YOU GET STARTED: First, you must already have a valid Specific Subject Matter Authorization for a SB2042 Single Subject Credential from Cal State Fullerton (or have completed it prior to applying for a second authorization).

WHAT TO DO: To add a second content area authorization, you need to complete the following:

  1. Verify Subject Matter Competency through one of the following options:
    1. Option 1: Specific Subject Matter Authorization
      1. Completion of an approved Subject Matter Preparation Program OR successful passage of the appropriate California Subject Examination for Teachers in that content area.
      2. No additional coursework is required.
    2. Option 2: Introductory Subject Matter Authorization (ISMA)
      1. Complete a 32-unit coursework for the ISMA in a content area.
        1. The Center for Careers in Teaching provides a suggested list of Cal State Fullerton courses that would be appropriate for ISMAs in Introductory English, Introductory Mathematics, and Introductory Science.
        2. The CCTC provides a list of ISMA areas and coursework.
      2. No additional coursework is required
  2. Apply directly to the CTC for your credential.
    1. Added authorizations are direct applications to the CCTC and do not need analysis by the Credential Preparation Center. The students may pick up an application from the Credential Preparation Center or they can download an application from California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The application can be submitted directly to CCTC.
