44OR Instruction in Reading for Secondary School Teaching: Developing Literacy and Cognitive Skills Across the Curriculum (3 units) EDSC 330 Developing Literacy in Secondary Schools (3 units) Prerequisite: EDSC 310. Methods and teaching strategies in developing literacy and cognitive skills across the curriculum; approaches to improve secondary students' vocabulary. reading comprehension. cognitive. and study skills in content area classes. Special attention to the literacy development of English learners.
44OM Multicultural Education in the Public Schools (3 units) EDSC 340 Diversity in Secondary Schools (3 units) Prerequisite: EDSC 310. Knowledge and skills for teaching special populations. Principles of educational equity and diversity. Strategies for providing students equitable access to the core curriculum. Exploration of how teaching is shaped by diversity in California society. Analysis of personal and institutional bias.
EDSC 54OC Teaching Content Area Courses to Language Minority Students (3 units) EDSC 410 Teaching English Learners in Secondary Schools (3 units) Prerequisite: EDSC 340. Examines teaching theories and methods of bilingual/English language development programs as well as the psychological factors that affect first- and second-language development. Includes emphasis on historical and current theories of second language acquisition, models of language programs, and state and federal legal requirements.
EDSC 540D Seminar in Teaching Strategies for Developing Academic Competence Across die Curriculum (3 units) EDSC 540 Graduate Studies in Teaching English Learners (3 units) Prerequisites: EDSC 410. Students must have been issued a preliminary credential. Final course required for CLAD Certificate addresses competencies needed by content-area teachers of English learners. Includes advanced pedagogy for English language development, strategies and techniques in teaching subject matter to English learners, and research and policy implications.
