California Reading Certificate
The California Reading Certificate authorizes the holder to provide the following services to students at one or more school sites, at grade levels authorized by an approved prerequisite credential:
- Provide student assessment in reading, and student instruction that is responsive to the assessment.
- Develop, implement and adapt reading instruction, and assist teachers in the prevention and correction of reading difficulties.
Admission Requirements:
- Applicants seeking a California Reading Certificate or Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential must provide a CBEST card indicating that you have successfully completed this test, or verification that you have taken the test, prior to applying to the program. You must pass the CBEST to be granted the Certificate and/or Credential.
- Possession of a valid California credential.
- Students wishing to apply the Certificate coursework toward the Masters and/or Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential must meet the additional Admission Requirements for those programs (see the menu link to Admission Requirements).
Course Requirements
- READ 501 "Assessment of Professional Competencies" (1 unit) prerequisite
- READ 507 "Reading and Thinking in the Content Areas (3 units)
- READ 508 "Teaching Reading/LA in Today's Elementary Schools" (3 units)
- READ 514 "Linguistics and Reading" (3 units)
- READ 516 "Diagnostic-Prescriptive Teaching of Reading" (4 units)
- READ 560 "The Sociocultural Context of Literacy and Learning" (3 units)
Additional Requirements
- Completion of three years of successful full-time teaching experience in any grade preschool through adult, exclusive of student teaching, internship teaching, or teaching while holding an emergency permit.
- By program completion, submit a Verification of Service form to document three years of successful full-time teaching experience in any grade preschool through adult, exclusive of student teaching, internship teaching, or teaching while holding an emergency permit. Verification of Service forms are available in the Department Office.
- Candidates wishing to apply Certificate coursework toward the Masters and/or Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential must maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.0.
