JoAnn Carter Wells

Dr. JoAnn Carter-Wells is a Professor of Reading and has previously served as the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Reading Program at California State University, Fullerton for almost 20 years. She is currently the Program Coordinator for the MS in Instructional Design and Technology which is the first online MS degree at CSUF. Dr. Carter-Wells is the past Editor of the Journal of College Reading and Learning published by the College Reading and Learning Association and received their first Professional Achievement Award. She is also a member of the advisory board of the Journal of General Education. Dr. Carter-Wells has conducted research and written extensively in various areas of post-secondary teaching, learning, and assessment with special emphasis on adult developmental psychology, critical reading and critical thinking, assessment and evaluation research, disciplinary differences in reading and learning, and communication skills and technology needs of the university environment. She has worked with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in an experimental technology based blended and linked curriculum project since 1997 which also incorporates community legal resources. Dr. Carter-Wells has served as Faculty Technology Coordinator for the College of Human Development and Community Service. Finally, she has also been Project Director for various university events including the campus visit and community lecture by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, the 40th anniversary celebration of CSUF, and a major kimono/art exhibit and related student production in coordination with a college in Tokyo, Japan.

Dr. Carter-Wells has published extensively in the area of college reading and learning and is the co-author of The Language of Learning: Vocabulary for College and Careers, 3rd Edition (Harcourt, 2002). Dr. Carter-Wells has also served as an evaluation consultant on various student learning projects across the country and for other disciplines including National Science Foundation grants in Chemical and Electrical Engineering and Biological Sciences, a CADD grant for the Intergraph Corporation and program evaluation for Nursing programs. She has been an invited Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Education Division for Santa Clara University and in the Advanced Educational Leadership program at West Virginia University. Dr. Carter-Wells has also worked with the corporate universities and Centers for Learning at First Union National Bank and Wachovia Bank on employee development and training in critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills. She is also the Co-Director of the Annual Assessment Conference at CSU, Fullerton. Although her primary area of expertise is at the post-secondary level, she has taught school in the inner city and served as a Reading Specialist for grades K-6.
