BCLAD
Are you bilingual?
There is a great need for bilingual teachers who can communicate with students and parents in their native language and who can help other teachers understand the cultures of the home (BCLAD Overview Information).
Participating in the Spanish BLCAD block will:
- increase your marketability as a prospective teacher
- provide the opportunity to improve academic Spanish language skills
- enhance your ability to contribute to the Latino community
- provide the opportunity to become part of a bilingual-bicultural learning community
A Little Information About the BCLAD Block:
- One additional course is required on teaching literacy in Spanish and the social-historical context of schooling for linguistic minorities (EDEL 446).
- Candidates should have Spanish language skills at the intermediate to advanced level (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Note: Language skills are not requried for membership in the Block but are required for BCLAD certification.
If you are interested in becoming a member of this Block please indicate this on your application. Indicate as well whether you prefer a two-semester block or a three-semester program (classes in the afternoon or evening).
If you speak Spanish you should consider seeking the bilingual emphasis credential offered at CSUF. There are also opportunities for bilingual certification in 10 other languages including Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese.
BCLAD Emphasis and BCLAD Certificate Programs
Depending upon enrollment, 2 or 3-semester BCLAD
cohorts begin every fall and spring.
The Spanish BCLAD Emphasis option:
All BCLAD Emphasis candidates must take EDEL 446: Inquiry
and Methods. Spanish language literacy testing is conducted upon
entry to the BCLAD Emphasis Program. Passing the literacy test satisfies
the foreign language requirement as discussed above.
The Asian BCLAD Emphasis options -- Korean, Mandarin, and Vietnamese.
This emphasis requires
that students complete the multiple subject program and take one
additional methods course as well as demonstrate knowledge of the
culture of emphasis either by taking a culture course or passing a
BCLAD state examination. The methods courses are offered at various CSU institutions including CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, CSULA, CSUN, Cal Poly Pomona and CSU Dominguez Hills. Students working toward the Asian BCLAD are
granted a CSU "passport" so that they may take a methods or culture
course at the institution where it is offered. For additional

BCLAD Certificate
The department does not offer coursework
leading to a BCLAD Certificate, however if
you have a CLAD you can obtain the BCLAD certificate by taking and
passing the CSET: LOTE subtests II or III (depending on language of emphasis), subtest IV and subtest V.
If you do not have a CLAD you will also need to take state tests
for the CLAD (known as CTEL exams) because CLAD is a prerequisite
for a BCLAD. The Multiple Subject Credential Program at CSUF includes
CLAD, therefore if you are enrolled in this program you will not
need to take the CTEL tests. You may take the state examinations
while you are enrolled in a credential program, however, you cannot
apply for the BCLAD Certificate before you hold a valid California
