Program Mission

The mission of the Ed.D. Program is to prepare informed and reflective educational leaders who ethically apply critical skills of evaluation, analysis, synthesis, and action to ensure excellence and equity in educational practice as they serve as stewards to the education community.

Distinctive Features of the Program:

  • The Community College Track as a parallel track to the PK-12 component in the doctoral in educational leadership where all courses are taught by community college/higher education faculty and all the students in the class are community college/higher education students.
  • The Cohort concept that serves as a support base and network for the development of a cohesive community college leadership group to support you through the program and beyond.  Students are selected based on the cohort model and an appreciation of diversity in professional interests, experiences and educational and personal backgrounds.
  • The Research Support Seminars that are small group seminars where instructors meet with the same group of students each semester, providing a stable advisor relationship for the development of sound research skills through practice and group support in preparation for the dissertation process.
  • Team Taught Courses that are an interesting aspect of this program where students experience the full-time faculty and practitioners from local colleges together providing instruction and clarity relative to leadership and California community colleges.
  • The Case Study approach that is used in most classes to inform teaching and learning that demonstrates the application of theory to practice and the role of research in informing both theory and practice.
  • The Center for Research on Educational Access and Leadership (C-REAL)  that is an active research center that engages graduate students at the master’s and doctoral levels in analyzing local problems and identifying solutions to those problems.  The Center is an integral part of the graduate curricula offerings so all students have an opportunity to interface with the Center.
