Elementary School Teaching

Elementary teachers have a variety of backgrounds. At Cal State Fullerton, the two most popular majors selected by future elementary teachers are Child & Adolescent Development (CHAD) and Liberal Studies (LBST). Other popular majors include American Studies, English, History and Geography. Students are encouraged to explore the pros and cons of each major.

Students face the following sets of intersecting requirements while progressing toward the goal of earning a multiple subject teaching credential:

  • Transfer/CSUF admission requirements
  • General Education Requirements
  • Major Requirements
  • Credential Program Prerequisites

Students must consider subject matter preparation when choosing classes to fulfill General Education and selecting a major. The sample academic plans and GE pattern recommendations show an IDEAL set of courses to simultaneously satisfy all of the above and subject matter preparation. However, if a student has already taken several GE classes before making the decision to become a teacher, it may not be necessary to take every class identified. Visit your community college transfer center for a schedule of our campus visits or to speak with an advisor.

Typically, any group of elementary teachers will have a variety of backgrounds and hold a diverse set of bachelor’s degrees, from Anthropology to Zoology. At Cal State Fullerton, the two most popular majors selected by future elementary teachers are Child & Adolescent Development (CHAD) and Liberal Studies (LBST).
