Overview

The Black Student Success Project is a longitudinal research initiative developed by the Center for Research on Educational Access and Leadership (C-REAL) at California State University, Fullerton. The project generates empirical research on the experiences of Black students within a Hispanic-Serving and historically White institutional context, with the goal of strengthening institutional understanding, practice, and outcomes.

As one of the few sustained research efforts focused specifically on Black student experiences within an HSI environment, the project provides data that informs institutional decision-making, climate assessment, and equity-focused strategy.

Purpose and Focus

The Black Student Success Project examines how Black students navigate academic environments and how institutional conditions shape their engagement, persistence, and success. Grounded in an educational psychology framework, the study investigates the relationships among identity, motivation, belonging, and academic outcomes over time.

Key areas of inquiry include:

  • Academic motivation and engagement
  • Racial identity and racial socialization
  • Sense of belonging and campus climate
  • Academic persistence and success indicators

By examining these dimensions together, the project offers a nuanced understanding of how Black students experience institutional environments and the factors that support or hinder their academic trajectories.

Research & Publications

The Black Student Success Project produces executive reports, institutional briefs, and peer-reviewed scholarship that translate research findings into insight for leaders, scholars, and practitioners. These publications support evidence-informed decision-making and contribute to national conversations on Black student success in higher education.
