The Professional Track/Intern Program in the Single Subject Credential at California State University, Fullerton is designed for students who wish to complete credential requirements while currently teaching in their credential preparation subject area/s in the public schools.
University C-19 Internship Credentials are issued to individuals who have enrolled in Commission-accredited internship programs. This credential authorizes the holder to serve, under the supervision of a Commission-accredited college or university and the holder's employer, in the area or subject listed on the credential. To be eligible for an internship credential, candidates must have the following items (state requirements):
-
Bachelor’s or higher degree.
-
Passage of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).
-
Completion of a U.S. Constitution course or examination.
-
Verification of subject-matter competency by program or examination. For single subject-matter competency, passage of either the appropriate CSET examination/s or completion of 100% of the subject-matter program.
-
Acceptance into a Commission-approved program and formal recommendation (41-4 Rec Form) from the California Institution of Higher Education (IHE) having an agreement for placement of the Intern with a public school district.
Students are admitted into the program following approval of the subject area advisor according to the application process for the Single Subject Credential Program. Information may be obtained by attending a Single Subject Credential Program Overview or downloading application materials from the Secondary Education web site.
Students may participate in this professinal track as they enter the program or they may switch into this track upon accepting a contracted internship teaching assignment in their content area during the first three weeks of the first semester of the program or at the beginning of their second semester in the program. |

| General Information |
|
| The Professional Track/Intern Prerequisites |
| Students in the Professional Track usually complete credential requirements over two semesters. Additionally, the program involves two semesters of prerequisite coursework. These courses include EDSC 310, EDSC 320, EDSC 330, EDSC 340 and EDSC 410. It is also highly recommended that students complete EDSC 304 Computer Technology or pass CSETs 133 & 134. There is one more requirement for students who accept an intern position in their first semester. They must complete EDSC 400 – Introduction to Internship prior to the first semester. |
|
| The Professional Track/intern Program |
| |
During the first semester the coursework (EDSC 440S/F, Foundations of Secondary School Teaching) is similar to that of the traditional seminar, with increased emphasis on immediate skill attainment with respect to classroom management, developing instructional materials and resources, student discipline, lesson planning, assessing students, and teaching strategies. Instead of meeting on Friday mornings, the Professional Track EDSC 440 Seminar meets on Monday afternoons to accommodate teaching assignments. Students also take 442 Methods in Subject Area and 449E Teaching in Subject Area.
Second semester interns complete EDSC 449I – Student Teacher (their job), 449S – Seminar in Subject Area, and EDSC 460 Teaching Performance Assessment. |
|
| The Professional Track/Intern Application Process |
| |
| The Professional Track applicant must complete all admissions requirements for the traditional Single Subject Credential Program. Only those candidates who demonstrate readiness to assume the responsibilities of full-time teaching and have approval of their subject area coordinator are accepted into the Professional Track Program. |
|
| The Intern Teaching Assignment |
| |
It is the responsibility of the candidate to obtain an intern teaching position in their area of subject matter competence within the service area of the CSU Fullerton Secondary Education Cooperative Teacher Education Program. For details, see the Single Subject Credential Program Handbook.
Internships may be arranged with any Orange County school district that completes an internship agreement. However, not all Subject Matter Programs accept internships outside of Orange County. Please contact your Subject Matter Program Advisor for specific information. Also Subject Matter Advisors do not approve all students for internship.
