/EDSC 4 304.jpgThe California State University Fullerton Single Subject Credential Program is an active participant in Intel® Teach to the Future. This worldwide effort helps pre-service teachers integrate technology into instruction to develop students' higher-level thinking skills and enhance learning. Participating teachers receive extensive instruction and resources to promote effective technology use in the classroom. Resources include a free textbook and CD–ROM. Learn more about Intel ® Teach to the Future and other exciting professional development and educational technology resources at Intel® Innovation in Education.

As part of the EDSC 304/307 Personal Proficiency in Educational Technology for Secondary Teachers course, all students develop a unit for their future classroom. This unit is aligned with the California Content Standards for a grade level and specific content of the students’ selection. It is organized around a motivating Essential Question and includes two major 7-12 student assignments—one requiring the use of PowerPoint to create a presentation and the other requiring the use of Publisher to create a newsletter or brochure.

Over the course of the semester, EDSC 304/307 students wear multiple hats as they (1) enhance their technology skills from the perspective of a college student; (2) develop a unit for implementation from the perspective of a classroom teacher; and (3) create samples of the presentation and newsletter/brochure as though they were a 7-12 grade student. The end result is a teacher candidate who is prepared to use technology to support 7-12 student learning in the content area.

Unit portfolios developed in EDSC 304/307 each include the following:
  • Unit Plan (in Word) for implementing the assignments in the unit.
  • K-12 Student Multimedia Assignment that includes
    • A completed sample presentation (in PowerPoint);
    • An Evaluation Tool (in Word) for assessing student work; and
    • A Support Tool (in Word) that will help students complete this assignment.
  • K-12 Student Newsletter/Brochure Assignment that includes
    • A completed sample presentation (in Publisher);
    • An Evaluation Tool (in Word) for assessing student work; and
    • A Support Tool (in Word) that will help students complete this assignment.
  • Teacher Lecture (in PowerPoint) that would be presented to students as part of the unit.
  • Web-Based Student Assignment, in which students use the Internet as a research tool to find answers, solve a problem, or complete a project.
  • K-12 Student Excel/Timeline Assignment that includes:
    • A completed sample timeline or spreadsheet (in Excel)
    • An Evaluation Tool/Assignment Guidelines
  • Several activities created through the Teacher Utility Activity, including crossword puzzles, word searches, etc. that extend the unit and support student learning.
EDSC 304/307 instructors may assign different activities for the minor components of the unit plan, but all instructors will require the unit plan template student multimedia presentation (sample and evaluation tool), and student Publisher assignment (sample and evaluation tool). Additional examples are available on Instructor Blackboard sites, the Intel® Teach to the Future CD-ROM, and at Unit and Project Plans: Ideas to Engage Students.

Linked below are three examples of completed units—in mathematics, social studies, and science. They demonstrate the interconnectedness of each of the activities created for K-12 student learning. The Department of Secondary Education acknowledges the contributions of Anne Walton, Kevin Bullat, and Erin Miller for their hard work and willingness to share their unit portfolios.
