Effective January, 31, 2008 CSUF will no longer be authorized to offer CLAD/CTEL Certificate Programs. If you have started taking CLAD courses from us, this will be the last chance to complete all of your coursework to obtain a CLAD certificate. Please note that CTC no longer accepts substitution of CLAD courses taken from other institutions which means that you must take all 4 classes (i.e., EDSC 330, 340, 410 & 540) from us and complete all the coursework no later than January 31, 2008. To help you meet the deadline, we will offer 540 one last time in Intersession which will run from 12/17/07 – 1/18/08 (with campus closed 12/24 – 1/1). It will be 100% online. For more information, contact Dr. Grace Cho at gcho@fullerton.edu.

The CSU Fullerton Secondary Education CLAD (Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development) Certificate is designed for secondary (7-12 grade) teachers wishing to develop expertise in meeting the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students and who completed their credential prior to implementation of AB1059 and SB2042 credentialing requirements.

Our program is state-approved and does not require taking the State CLAD examination. Upon completion of the program, candidates may apply for the CLAD Certificate directly to the California CTC or through the CSU Fullerton Credential Preparation Center for an additional fee of $25.00.

CLAD Information

WHAT?
  • The CLAD/BCLAD is an authorization that allows teachers to work with English Language Learners (ELLs) in diverse California classroom settings.
  • It is only required for all teacher candidates who were issued a preliminary credential prior to AB1059 and SB2042 credentialing requirements.
FOR WHOM?
  • The CLAD Certificate is designed for both credentialed teachers (prior to July 2001) wishing to develop expertise in meeting the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students.
  • The CLAD or “Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development” refers to the preparation and training of teachers to provide instruction in English.
  • The BCLAD or “Bilingual Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development” refers to the preparation of bilingual teachers.
WHY?
  • The state of California mandates that teachers must possess this authorization in order to work with English learners.
  • The program is designed to prepare teachers for teaching language minority students in different types of programs within schools.
  • Coursework will equip teachers with sound theoretical base for the implementation of effective teaching strategies for English learners in their own classrooms.

The knowledge and skills teachers need in order to meet the needs of English learners have been divided into six domains:

    1. Test 1: Language structure and First and Second Language Development
    2. Test 2: Methodology of Bilingual, English Language Development, and Content Instruction
    3. Test 3: Culture and Cultural Diversity
    4. Test 4: Methodology for Primary Language Instruction
    5. Test 5: Culture of Emphasis
    6. Test 6: Language of Emphasis
HOW?
  • CLAD Certificate: At California State University Fullerton, teachers who posses a valid teaching certificate may qualify to teach ELLs by earning a CLAD Certificate through college course work and/or examinations. CLAD Certificate seekers must demonstrate competence in domains one through three by either completing twelve upper-division or graduate semester units of course work in domains one through three of by passing Test 1,2,3 of the CLAD/BCLAD examinations.
    • Sequence of Coursework
      • EDSC 330 Developing Literacy in Secondary
      • EDSC 340 Diversity in Secondary Schools
      • EDSC 410 Teaching English Learners in Secondary Schools

  • BCLAD Certificate: Teachers who posses a valid teaching certificate may earn a BCLAD certificate by completing the requirements for a CLAD Certificate and by completing additional coursework or passing CLAD/BCLAD Tests four through six.

WHAT ELSE IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW?

  • EDSC 330, 340, and 410 are required as part of the regular credential program.
