- What is a “Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development (CLAD)” certificate?
- It is an authorization that allows teachers to work with English Learners (ELs) in diverse California classroom settings.
- For whom is the CLAD certificate designed?
- It’s designed for credentialed teachers who have completed their credential prior to Spring 2002.
- What are the CLAD domains?
- With input from the experts in the field of teaching ELs, the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) identified a list of knowledge and skills will equip teachers with a sound theoretical base to instruct and support ELs.
- They have divided the “knowledge and skills teachers need in order to meet the needs of ELs” into 6 domains.
- CLAD Certificate seekers must demonstrate competence in domains one through three by either completing 12 upper-division or graduate semester units of course work in domains 1-3 or by passing test 1, 2, and 3 of the CLAD/BCAL examinations.
- Which courses meets what CLAD domains?
- Our coursework is not divided exactly into the CLAD domains.
- b. CLAD domains 1-3 are met throughout our 4 courses (EDSC 330, EDSC 340, EDSC 410 and EDSC 540). Each course includes some content from each of the three domains at the introduction, theoretical, or application level.
- For more information on what courses meets which CLAD domains, see the “articulation with CLAD certificate domains.
- What are the courses required for a CLAD Certificate?
- In the CSUF Secondary Education department, the following courses are required.
- EDSC 330 Developing Literacy in Secondary Schools
- EDSC 340 Diversity in Secondary Schools
- EDSC 410 Teaching English Learners in Secondary Schools
- EDSC 540 Advanced Studies in Teaching English Learners
- I took some courses while a credential student in 2000 – and they had different numbers (like 440R, 440M, 440C, 440D). Will they still count?
- a. Yes. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing will accept the following courses as equivalent:
- EDSC 330 = EDSC 440R
- EDSC 340 = EDSC 440M
- EDSC 410 = EDSC 540C or EDSC 440C
- EDSC 540 = EDSC 540D or EDSC 440D
- When are courses offered?
- a. EDSC 540 is only offered during the fall semester.
- b. EDSC 330, 340, and 410 are offered fall, spring, intersession, and summer.
- Is it possible that courses I took at other universities will apply?
- It is possible, but 75% (at least 3) of courses must be taken through the Department of Secondary Education to meet our CLAD Certificate Program requirements.
- Courses from other universities or CSUF Departments must be approved by the Secondary Education CLAD Coordinator.
- Do I need to apply to the university or can I take classes through Extended Education? Which is a better choice?
- a. Well, it depends.
- Applying to the university as a post bac credential/subject matter student will usually take a semester. But, once admitted, you get priority enrollment and is less expensive to take 6 units in one semester.
- Enrolling as an Extended Education student is quicker, but you have the lowest enrollment priority and it is more expensive.
- Once I have completed all the CLAD coursework (i.e., EDSC 330, EDSC 340, EDSC 410, EDSC 540), how do I apply for the certificate?
- The Single Subject Credential Program CLAD certificate application checklist is available online at http://ed.fullerton.edu/SecEd/CLAD_WebSite/Index.htm
- Submit the application to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing
- Submit directly to CTC with appropriate fee and all documents necessary to meet the requirements listed on the application checklist.
- If issued within last 5 years, a copy of your teaching credential can be obtained from CP-700.
- Can EDSC 540 work towards my Master’s degree?
- a. YES, it may count as a 3-unit elective in the MSE Secondary Education.
- What if I want to pursue CLAD exam option instead of taking classes?
- Remember that CSUF Single Subject Credentialed students have already completed at least 2 of 4 required courses.
- For any CLAD exam option: Request a bulletin from CP-700 for more information.
- What is a BCLAD: “Bilingual Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development”?
