This prestigious award is named for Professor Emeritus Edwin Carr who was appointed Professor of Education and Economics in 1960. He came to Orange County State College, the predecessor of CSUF, from the University of Colorado, Boulder. In his active career, he exemplified the purposes of the Edwin Carr Fellowship through his scholarship and service to his department, school and university. He was an honored member of his profession having served as the President of the National Council for Social Studies. This fellowship honors its recipients for their achievement and promise to the profession.

Each year, the Reading Department faculty recommends a graduating master's student to the dean, to to be honored as an Edwin Carr Fellow. The recommendation is based on two criteria: meritorious achievement throughout the master’s program and holding promise for making significant contributions to the profession. Edwin Carr Fellows from each of the Departments in the College of Education serve on the Edwin Carr Fellow College of Education Advisory Board.

The Reading Department's  Edwin  Carr Fellow for 2008-2009 is Megan Smith.
