Department of Reading

The Department of Reading offers numerous graduate programs and undergraduate courses. In our graduate programs we prepare professionals who improve student learning, promote diversity, make informed decisions, engage in collaborative endeavors, maintain professional and ethical standards, and become change agents in their workplaces. Additionally, our undergraduate courses promote critical thinking and lifelong learning requiring students to make informed choices of the techniques, materials, strategies, and approaches most appropriate for their academic, professional, and personal needs.

What does the Department of Reading offer?

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION (READING) This degree program prepares reading professionals who truly understand how to integrate contemporary theories of reading with sound pedagogical practice. Courses provide a foundation in elementary, secondary and college reading.
READING/LANGUAGE ARTS SPECIALIST CREDENTIAL The Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing has granted approval to the Reading Department to offer a Reading/Language Arts Specialist cCredential.
CALIFORNIA READING CERTIFICATE This 16 unit certificate authorizes the holder to develop, implement and adapt reading instruction, and assist teachers with respect to the prevention and intervention of reading difficulties.
POSTSECONDARY READING & LEARNING CERTIFICATE This 12 unit certificate provides a cutting-edge curriculum that meets the emerging needs for community college faculty in the area of postsecondary reading. The certificate satisfies the California mandate under AB 1725 requiring certification in adult reading / learning instruction for community college teachers.

New: Online Masters Degree in Reading

The Reading Department will offer the option of earning the Masters Degree 100% Online beginning Fall 2010*.

Come to a 2-day "Boot-Up Camp" in August 2010, to meet your classmates and professors face-to-face, learn to use features of the BlackBoard websites, and get an overview of the first year major assignments. (This information and videos of the sessions will be provided online to students unable to attend in person.) 25 seats available.
