Department of Reading Education

The Department of Reading Education offers state and nationally accredited graduate programs in Reading Education. Coursework and field experiences equip candidates to make informed instructional decisions in a variety of leadership roles. Based on the professional dispositions targeted by the College of Education, the graduate programs are designed to prepare professionals who promote diversity, engage in collaborative endeavors, think critically, maintain professional and ethical standards, and value lifelong learning. The Department also offers undergraduate courses, preparing students to make informed choices of the techniques, materials, strategies, and approaches most appropriate for their academic, professional, and personal needs.

Graduate Programs Offered

Master of Science in Education (Reading). This degree program prepares reading professionals who understand how to integrate contemporary theories of reading with sound pedagogical practice. Courses provide a foundation in elementary, secondary and college reading.
California Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential. The state-accredited graduate credential shares core courses with the Masters degree program, with additional coursework in effective program design and professional development.
California Reading Certificate. This 17-unit state-accredited graduate certificate authorizes the holder to develop, implement and adapt reading instruction, and assist teachers in evaluating and working with students reading difficulties.
Postsecondary Reading and Learning Certificate. This 13-unit graduate certificate provides a cutting-edge curriculum that meets the emerging needs for community college faculty in the area of postsecondary reading. The certificate satisfies the California mandate under AB 1725 requiring certification in adult reading / learning instruction for community college teachers. The program is delivered online.

Undergraduate Courses Offered

The Department offers an undergraduate course in critical reading as critical thinking that meets the University's General Education requirement in critical thinking. Courses in vocabulary/comprehension, and in academic reading are offered to undergraduates in need of strengthening developmental reading capabilities. A course in language and literacy development in young children fulfills an elective requirement in the undergraduate CHAD program
