TakeOne!

The Professional Teaching Development Center at CSU Fullerton can support cohorts of teachers who would like to participate in TakeOne!, a new program from the National Board in which teachers complete 1 reflective portfolio entry that examines their practice through the lens of the National Board Standards. Take One! is available in all 25 certificate areas the National Board offers. TakeOne! is a great way to promote and enhance professional learning communities (PLCs) at a school site.

TakeOne! can also serve as a teacher’s first step toward completing a full National Board Candidate portfolio.  When a TakeOne! entry is submitted to the National Board, it is evaluated through the same process as National Board candidate portfolio entries.  The score received for a TakeOne! entry is valid for two (2) years.  If a TakeOne! participant scores well and chooses to pursue full National Board Certification in the same certificate area within that two-year period, s/he would only need to complete the 3 remaining portfolio entries and the assessment center exercises.

To learn more about TakeOne!,

How can the PTDC at CSU Fullerton support TakeOne! participants?

The Center’s professional development program for TakeOne! participants consists of nine one-hour sessions offered on-site at your school or district location.  These will be conducted by a National Board Certified Teacher who has been trained by the National Board and who will use specially developed curriculum materials.

What does it cost to receive on-site support for TakeOne! participants?

Once you’ve paid the TakeOne! participant fee (see below), there is no additional cost for the nine one-hour on-site professional development sessions.  The cost of the support provider is covered by the PTDC at CSU Fullerton.

What is the minimum number of participants necessary to receive support for TakeOne!?

In order to provide on-site support for TakeOne! participants, the PTDC at CSU Fullerton requires there to be at least 10 participants in a cohort.

What is the cost for TakeOne!?

The fee per participant for TakeOne! is $395 (less if you have > 10 participants from one site). Participant fees for TakeOne! must be paid directly to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Can districts use professional development funds to pay for TakeOne!?

Yes. As a rigorous form of professional development, the TakeOne! fee and any cost associated with facilitating TakeOne! can be paid for with QEIA monies.  The same is true for Title I and Title II professional development funds. Additionally, Take One! meets the requirements for follow up hours for SB472 Reading and Mathematics training.

Are scholarships available for TakeOne! participants?

The Center has limited scholarship funds but may be able to offer scholarships of not more than $100 for TakeOne! participants whose school or district cannot cover the full fee.  Contact Mark Ellis, mellis@fullerton.edu, for more information about this.
