National Board Candidate Support

The Professional Teaching Development Center at California State University, Fullerton has run a support program for National Board Candidates since 2007 under the direction of Dr. Mark Ellis, NBCT and Tara Barnhart, NBCT. These support sessions offer teachers an opportunity to collaborate with National Board Certified Teachers and other National Board Candidates while completing the classroom-based portfolio assessment and preparing for the assessment center exercises.  This type of collaborative support is recognized by the National Board as a valuable part of the assessment process. We offer support for first-time Candidates and Advanced Candidates.

The CSU Fullerton Candidate Support Sessions meet monthly on Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM on the CSUF campus, College Park Room 550 (2600 E. Nutwood in Fullerton, at the corner of Nutwood and Commonwealth).  Local cohorts also meet once monthly during the week in the Pomona Unified School District, Anaheim Union School District, Whittier Union School District, Beaumont Unified School District, and the Corona Norco Unified School District.  Meetings address topics such as the National Board teaching standards, writing within the portfolio, videotaping your classroom, and understanding the scoring process.  National Board Certified Teachers facilitate small groups based on certificate areas.  In the small groups, candidates generally provide constructive feedback on each other's work, share experiences, and raise and answer questions about teaching and the assessment process.  Most candidates tell us that being part of a group provides a greater opportunity for professional growth while completing the National Board process.

Please note, if you plan to participate in the CSU Fullerton Candidate Support Program, participation in one of the Introductory Seminars is highly recommended since information and material will be addressed in these seminars that will not be repeated in the support program sessions.
