CLAD Certificate

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT CHANGES

TO CLAD CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The CLAD (Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development) Certificate is designed for teachers who hold a multiple subject teaching credential.  The Department of Elementary and Bilingual Education at California State University, Fullerton has a CLAD certificate program that is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.  Candidates who successfully complete the requirements will not need to take the State CLAD examination.  You may apply to take courses through Extended Education.  Call (657) 278-2611.  Upon completion of the program, candidates may apply directly to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the certificate.  Applications are available at the Credentials Office in College Park 740.

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential

Study Plan

The CLAD Certificate Program requires 12 semester units consisting of five courses from California State University, Fullerton. Note: Candidates must complete all coursework by January 31, 2008. After that date CSUF will not offer a CLAD Program and any classes taken at CSUF will not be accepted by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the CLAD Certificate.

The 12-unit study plan includes the following courses:


EDEL 325 (3 units) Cultural Pluralism in Elementary Schools
SPED 438* (1 unit) Supervised Fieldwork
SPED 434* (2 units) Methods & Inquiry for Teaching English Learners
EDEL 530** (3units) Second Language Development
And either:
EDEL 500 (3units) Bilingual Multicultural Curriculum
Or
EDEL 531 (3units) Integrated Language Arts

*SPED 434 and SPED 438 must be taken concurrently.
**SPED 434 and SPED 438 are prerequisites to EDEL 530.

The choice between EDEL 500 and EDEL 531 allows students to focus on either cultural or language development issues.

CSUF WILL NOT OFFER THE CLAD PROGRAM AFTER JANUARY 31, 2008.



Master’s Degree Integration
As many as three of the CLAD courses are applicable to a Master’s Degree in the Department of Elementary and Bilingual Education. These are EDEL 500, EDEL 530 and EDEL 531.
