Teaching Credentials: Preliminary Credential

Requirements for Preliminary Credential

At entrance of program:
  • Bachelor's Degree. A baccalaureate (or higher) degree from an institution approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. (A major in Education is not permitted.)
  • U.S. Constitution test or equivalent course. Satisfactory completion of at least two semester units of work on the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution or passage of an examination.
  • CBEST. Possession of basic skills as determined by the California Basic Skills Educational Skills Test.
  • Demonstration of broad subject matter knowledge demonstrated by successful passage of CSET.
At end of program:
  • Successful completion of a commission-approved program of teacher education.
  • RICA. Completion of the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment by examination or portfolio.
