Teaching Credentials: Preliminary Credential

Requirements for Preliminary Credential

At entrance of program:
  • Bachelor's Degree. A baccalaureate degree from an institution approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (students within 6 units of completing their major requirements and/or having an unlimited number of elective units to complete should contact the department for possible undergraduate acceptance).
  • U.S. Constitution test or equivalent course. Satisfactory completion of at least two semester units of work on the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution or passage of an examination.
  • CBEST. Possession of basic skills as determined by the California Basic Skills Educational Skills Test or the CSET Writing Skills subtext or any other equivalent accepted by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing..
  • CSET. Demonstration of broad subject matter knowledge demonstrated by successful passage of CSET.
At end of program:
  • CalTPA. Successful completion of a commission-approved program of teacher education, which includes successful completion of California Teaching Performance Assessments.
  • RICA. Completion of the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment by examination or portfolio.
