Dr. Ruth Yopp-Edwards
Dr. Ruth Yopp-Edwards teaches preservice and graduate literacy
courses in the Department of Elementary and Bilingual Education
and directs three teacher development programs. She earned her Ph.D.
in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in the psychology and
pedagogy of reading at the University of California, Riverside. Her
research and writing activities focus on the use of informational
text in the primary grades, comprehension and vocabulary
instruction, and early literacy development. Dr. Yopp-Edwards is
co-author of four books: Literature-based Reading Activities, Oo-pples and Boo-noo-noos: Songs and Activities for Phonemic
Awareness, Ready for Reading: A Handbook for Parents of
Preschoolers, and 50 Strategies for Active Teaching:
Engaging K-12 Learners in the Classroom. She has publications
in national and international journals and has served on several
state and national policy committees. Dr. Yopp-Edwards taught in the
upper elementary grades for ten years and was recipient of the
Orange County Teacher of the Year Award. In 2000, she was inducted
into the California Reading Association’s Hall of Fame for her
contributions to literacy in the state.
