Dr. Amy Cox-Petersen
Amy Cox-Petersen joined the faculty in 1998
after receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California
in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis in Science Education.
Her research interests include teacher knowledge and informal science
learning in museum and field settings. She received an honorary
appointment as a Research Associate at the Natural History Museum
of Los Angeles County to conduct visitor studies related to science
learning in the museum.
She has published articles in professional journals such as Journal
of Science Teacher Education, Journal of Research in Science Teaching,
The School Community Journal, and Science & Education. She presents
regularly at professional meetings including AERA, AETS, NARST,
and NSTA. One of her articles, “Empowering Science Teachers
as Researchers and Inquirers” was awarded Best Paper at the
Association for the Education of Teachers in Science 2001 annual
meeting. She was awarded the 2000 Distinguished Science Teacher
Award at the four-year college level by the California Science Teachers
Association.
At Cal State Fullerton she frequently teaches courses in Educational
Foundations and Elementary Science Methods as part of the Multiple
Subjects Credential Program. She also teaches Graduate Studies in
Elementary Science Education, Curriculum Theory and Development,
and Survey of Educational Research as part of the Masters Degree
Program. She taught elementary and middle school students for ten
years in both inner city and suburban settings before entering higher
education.
