Do you meet the criteria for a Fifth Year Program? You must have already been issued a preliminary credential (single or multiple subject) and meet one of the following conditions: |
- You are an employed teacher who needs NCLB subject matter coursework.
- You are an Induction-eligible teacher but there is no induction program available to you.

| Important Steps |
- Apply to the university as post-baccalaureate, clear credential.
- Complete a Fifth Year Study Plan (MS Word Version or PDF Versions) in your first advanced course.
- Complete all required coursework.
- Visit the Credential Preparation Center to complete paperwork.
- Apply to the university as post-baccalaureate, clear credential. (You may also complete coursework through University Extended Education, but classes are more expensive and you have low priority for enrollment.)

Education Code 44259© outlines requirements for obtaining a Professional Clear Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credential for those who complete the SB 2042 teacher preparation program. Candidates may complete a commission approved Induction Program or a commission approved Fifth Year of Study. |

| IMPORTANT INFORMATION |
Only those SB2042 Preliminary Credential holders with an issuance date of August 30, 2004 or later who are either required to complete subject matter coursework under NCLB in order to be qualified for a teaching assignment OR who are eligible for induction but for whom there is no induction program available will be eligible to participate in a Fifth Year program. |

| California State University, Fullerton’s Fifth Year of Study Program was approved January 2005. There are two major components: |

| Component 1: Program |
| A program of course work consisting of a minimum of 30 semester units beyond the bachelor’s degree. The course work or degree is to be in a field of study designed to improve the teacher’s competence and skills and may be in the field of education as well as other related areas. Programs may include: |
- Completion of approved program of professional preparation.
- Additional subject matter preparation.
- Completion of an approved program for an advanced or specialized credential.
- Pursuit of a master’s or higher degree in education or related areas.

Component 2: Advanced Coursework |
Twelve (12) units of advanced coursework in health education, methods of delivering appropriate educational services to students with exceptional needs; computer-based technology, and the study of teaching English learners. Advanced coursework may only be completed after the issuance of a single or multiple subject credential. Any coursework completed prior to the issuance of such a credential is not applicable toward the Fifth Year of Study. |

Advanced Coursework in Teaching English Learners |
EDEL 530 Graduate Studies in Second Language Learning Seminar
(Spring only): Significant research, curriculum developments and materials, and criteria for planning and improving second language programs including those for English as a Second Language. |

EDSC 540 Graduate Studies in Teaching English Learners Includes methodology of English language development and content instruction for English learners, strategies for specially-designed academic instruction in English. Focuses on research and policy. |

Advanced Coursework in Health Education |
| HESC 558 Advanced Study of School Health Education Advanced course designed to facilitate delivery of comprehensive school health education. Emphasis will be placed on strategies for personal, classroom, and school safety. Application of state/federal laws pertaining to health and safety will be evaluated. |

| Advanced Coursework in Educational Technologies |
EDEL 512 Level 2 Technology for K-8 Teachers Theoretical basis and strategies for improving teaching of elementary students through use of multimedia technologies. Emphasis on HyperStudio, telecommunications and other digital media. |

EDSC 504 Advanced Instructional Proficiency in Secondary Educational Technologies Theoretical basis and strategies for improving teaching and learning in secondary school classrooms through multimedia technologies. Emphasis on the utilization of technology for curricular, instructional, and assessment purposes to support all students in learning. |

FLED 532: Technology in Second Language Learning Examination and discussion of key concepts and issues in educational technology relevant to teaching second languages. An exploration of theories, practices, and equipment currently used. Focus on uses of computers, the internet, videos, etc. |

Advanced Coursework in Teaching Special Populations |
SPED 529: Collaborative Seminar in Advanced Study in Teaching Special Populations Provides training in professional collaboration and instructional and behavioral strategies needed for students with special needs and who are gifted and talented to be successful in the general education classroom. Candidates complete a state-mandated Induction Plan for Professional Growth |
